Points Of Light, I recently re-watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It's not a movie I'd recommend to everyone as it can seem dark in places. Having said that, I feel it takes an honest look at what I'm always saying, that life isn't simple nor is it simply understand. For this reason, I think it's worth a mention.
In the movie, while they don't realize it, both Joel and Clementine have to stop and give themselves some long waited for and well deserved tenderness. As we watch them, even while they don't, we see the light they both have within. In Clementine, we find the wonderful synthesis of her internal beauty as we get to notice her light figuratively expressed through her choice of four disparate colors of hair dyes she names and uses during the running of the movie. Joel shows us his light and depth of his beautiful color in the art he draws and in the notes and stories he carefully writes. With this light and color we get to see their combined intrinsic beauty as they grow their relationship. But as they live their lives and take on a together journey, they get lost and lose one another on the way. As the movie comes to a close, they eventually learn living and breathing consists of the light, color, and beauty they feel in themselves and see in one another. I think this is the key to everything in this movie.
So, some of my random thoughts after re-watching Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind -
Who do you love? Is it worth it? Look at them, the loved, feel the depth of your giving as the giving is given. Look at them, the loved, feel the reception of their giving as they give. Breathe, just be. You can't see everything at once, where does the journey end? The light of kindness in your heart, feel your beauty as you show it. Find that same light outside yourself, and receive it. Keep walking, continue the journey, look for color and find its beauty. Be brutally honest, talk, communicate - do it strongly and fiercely for the sake of love. As you need your truth acknowledged, acknowledge theirs - listen with your heart - cry, weep, smile, laugh. A grin built into this breath is a tear built into another breath but you always breathe, right? Sometimes, sunshine is hidden behind a dark cloud, waiting and wanting with awesome expectation, to peek at you, and that is lovely.
